Gum Disease in Hyderabad: Signs, Stages, and When to Treat It
Gum disease affects more than 80% of adults in India and is the leading cause of tooth loss. Here is how to recognise it early and what treatment involves.
Gum disease is the most common dental condition in India — and also the most neglected. It develops painlessly in the early stages, which is why most patients only seek treatment when significant damage has already occurred.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection of the tissues supporting your teeth — the gums, ligaments, and jawbone. It begins when plaque (a film of bacteria) accumulates at the gum line and is not removed by brushing and flossing.
Gingivitis: Inflammation of gum tissue only. Gums are red, swollen, and bleed when brushed. At this stage the damage is entirely reversible with professional cleaning.
Periodontitis: The infection spreads below the gum line, destroying the bone and ligament that anchor your teeth. Teeth become loose, periodontal pockets form, and eventually teeth are lost. This stage causes permanent bone loss.
Warning Signs to Check Right Now
Gums that bleed when you brush (never normal), red or swollen gums, gums pulling away from your teeth (recession), persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing, teeth that feel loose or have shifted, or visible pus between teeth and gums.
If you have two or more of these signs, book an appointment at Dr. Sri Sushma Multispeciality Dental Clinic in Anandbagh immediately.
Risk Factors
Diabetes: People with poorly controlled diabetes are 2–3 times more likely to develop severe gum disease, and gum disease in turn makes blood sugar harder to control.
Smoking: The single largest lifestyle risk factor. Smokers have 4 times the risk of periodontitis, and their disease responds less well to treatment.
Stress, certain medications, and genetics all increase susceptibility.
Treatment Options at Our Clinic
Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning): First-line treatment. Ultrasonic scalers remove tartar and bacteria from below the gum line under local anaesthesia. Most patients return to normal activity the same day.
Laser Gum Therapy: Precise removal of infected tissue from periodontal pockets — without scalpels, without sutures, with significantly faster healing. Particularly beneficial for anxious patients and diabetics.
Flap Surgery and Bone Regeneration: For advanced cases. The gum tissue is carefully opened to access deep infection, then bone grafts or regenerative proteins may be placed to stimulate regrowth.
